mount batukaru : bali

overview

Bali, known as "the island of the Gods", is one of 17,000 islands that make up Indonesia , and is approximately 10 degrees south of the Equator. Spectacular scenery, a rich cultural heritage and deeply spiritual people combine to make Bali one of the world's most enchanting places. It is a tropical paradise of vibrant culture and beautiful land and seascapes. Rice paddies trip down hillsides like giant steps, volcanoes soar through the clouds, the forests are lush and tropical, and the beaches are lapped by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.

This 2,278m peak of Mount Batukaru in Central Bali towers over the local landscape and is the second highest mountain to Mount Agung (3142m). Mount Batukaru is an extinct volcano and one of the prettiest places in Bali. The word Batukaru means, "The Coconut Shell Rock" and all local temples have a shrine dedicated to the spirit of the mountain. The serene Lake Beratan fills the ancient crater of Mount Batukaru and the local people honour the goddess of the lake at a temple of Pura luhur Watukaru built on high on its slopes.

Stay at Sarinbuana Eco Lodge in a beautiful hand crafted bungalow at 700m on the slopes of Mount Batukaru, the perfect base for a gentle walk into the largest rainforest in Bali or day trek to the top of the mountain (2200m) with a local experienced guide. The lodge is surrounded by a lush tropical “food forest” of cacao, coffee, vanilla and jungle fruits with spectacular panoramas to southern Bali. Be a part of the vibrant Hindu culture with traditional Balinese villages close by, swim in the lodges natural waterholes with cascading waterfalls or just sit back, relax and take in the views.

The service here is private and intimate, the staff are all local and there are only ever a maximum of 10 guests staying here. Traditional local dishes are produced by the lodge’s chef from the organic gardens. There are sweet scents and exotic flowers, plus more than seventy edible plants in the extensive lodge gardens.

Some come to unwind, some come to retreat, some come to be inspired, some come to soak in the green .. all leave with more than they came with..
