overview
Ithaca is a beautiful verdant island of mountains, pine forests, cypresses, olive trees, vineyards and amazing beaches with crystal-clear waters. Probably the most legendary of all the Greek islands famous for being the beloved home of Odysseus, Ithaca is still one of the least known. It is separated from the island of Kefallonia by a narrow canal, only three kilometres wide and is the second smallest and the most under-developed island in the Ionian.
Fortunately, Ithaca has not yet been spoiled by mass tourism. This is not the place to come if you are looking for wild nights out and large overcrowded sandy beaches, with sunbeds and umbrellas as long as the eye can see! Ithaca is not like that.
It is an exceptionally beautiful and very peaceful place, ideal for those wanting relaxation, peaceful walks, wonderful swimming in an impossibly blue sea, small shingle coves boarded by pine and olive trees, and great calm. Days are slow and tranquil. Wandering through the little villages with their brightly coloured blue doors and rough walls lost under countless layers of whitewash - this is somewhere you can take your time to unwind.
One thing you can never escape in Ithaca is the sea. From virtually any vantage point, it is visible in one, two or even three directions. Hire a little boat to explore its shores and settle in your own private bay lapped by the warm, gentle water of the placid Ionian Sea.
Stay in a seven-acre private country estate perched on a hillside with spectacular sea views below. This organic olive oil producing estate comprises four houses, each set into its own fragrant garden terrace, with a swimming pool and outdoor amenities. It is the perfect place for families, friends and for a romantic getaway where hospitality is the abiding hallmark.
There are organic vegetable and herb gardens, a morning coffee shop and a quite separate 'farm' area which is home to a donkey, half a dozen pet sheep and chickens! You can help yourself to produce from the garden or fruit from the orchards, and choose meals from a menu of foods prepared using homegrown ingredients. A large range of preserves and herbal products are also made on the estate for you to enjoy whilst on holiday, or to take home as gifts. On arrival you will find a car in the car park for your exclusive use, and a kitchen well stocked with beverages and foods.
Ithaca's lack of tourists, its mythological past and its outstanding natural beauty make it an island not to be missed. A peaceful and traditional Greek island, with friendly villagers and sparsely populated beaches.
