overview
Gorgeous African sunsets, solitude and peace are a reality here. Guests can choose to do as little, or as much, as they want… Relax on unspoiled and uncrowded beaches or dive the pristine, uncharted depths. Take a walk through the indigenous forest and enjoy excellent bird watching, or have a castaway picnic on a remote stretch of beach. Spend hours teasing the fish on fly or indulge in a relaxing aromatherapy massage… it’s all up to you.
Part of the Bazaruto Archipelago, Benguerra Island was declared a National Park in 2000 and is an unspoiled, undeveloped and unpolluted paradise.
Just off the southern coast of Mozambique, the island is home to one of the country’s finest beach resorts, Benguerra Lodge, a small intimate lodge with a rich East African/Arabic feel, washed by the turquoise waters of the warm Moçambique channel. This is barefoot luxury at its very best.
Benguerra lodge blends into a natural acacia and mahogany forest bordering Benguerra Bay and is encircled by white-sand beaches, coral reefs and clear turquoise seas. Accommodation consists of eleven open-sided, thatched cabanas built on stilts and scattered around the main lodge building. Each has an en-suite bathroom and a veranda looking out to sea.
With breathtaking reefs, numerous dive and snorkelling sites it is a diver’s paradise that’s perfect for beginners, as well as experienced divers. The full spectrum of coral species will keep you spellbound. The reefs are pristine and the coral unbleached. There are humpback whales, dolphins, moray eels, and leatherback, green, hawksbill and loggerhead turtles to be seen. The marine ecosystem is also one of the last refuges of the Dugong which you may spot grazing on marine grass meadows found in the sheltered bays. The lodge has a fully equipped dive school to allow guests to explore this underwater world.
Other activities on offer include boat trips to neighbouring islands, deep-sea fishing and island walks, or you can just relax in the shade of a beach umbrella or by the freshwater swimming pool. Delicious fresh seafood forms the basis of the Portuguese-influenced cuisine, and in the evenings you can enjoy a sunset cruise on a traditional dhow to see the flamingoes. Altogether, Benguerra offers a wonderful combination of marine safari and the perfect beach holiday.
