Mara Camp
Offbeat Mara Camp is a seasonal camp located on the Olare Orok river on Koyiaki Group Ranch. This small and exclusive tented camp offers a truly private, traditional safari experience with access to the famous Maasai Mara Game Reserve.
Tucked away in a prime wildlife area, Offbeat Mara Camp provides guests with superb game viewing - lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo are all seen regularly. Most importantly, the camp is far from other lodges and camps. The camp aims to provide guests with great game viewing 'away from the masses'.
The Maasai Mara plays host to the annual migration from July to September. An enormous concentration of wildebeest, zebra and consequently predators pass through the surrounding plains. Unrestricted by game reserve rules around camp, guests can enjoy daytime game drives as well as night drives in custom-built Land Cruisers; bush breakfasts, picnics and sundowners. Guests also have full access to the Game Reserve, the MaraRiver and early morning balloon trips.
The camp sleeps 12 guests in 6 large tents - 3 doubles and 3 twins. (an extra bed can be added to each tent for small children). Each tent has an en-suite bathroom with hot bucket showers, wash basins and flush loos. The spacious tents are all furnished with large, hand made cedar beds, 24hour solar lighting and the finest linen.
Informal dining is hosted in the mess tent or around the campfire. Delicious English breakfasts, light lunches and three course dinners are served each evening. Guests can relax in the bar and 'mess' tent, furnished with comfortable sofas, a writing desk and library with wildlife guide books.
Offbeat Mara Camp works closely with the local Maasai community. Local Maasai helped build the camp with Piers Winkworth, the owner. Several of them are now working as the camps staff and guides.

Deloraine
Deloraine is the home Tristan and Cindy Voorspuy. It is full of Kenya's fascinating history. Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, came to stay here on a number of occasions. Built by Lord Francis Scott in 1920, a prominent early settler instrumental in developing farms throughout Kenya and set in 3500 acres of farm, it is one of the finest examples of colonial architecture in Kenya. Your time here will reflect the elegant lifestyle of a bygone era.
Deloraine is located on the western edge of the Great Rift Valley on the lower slopes of MountLondiani. It is within driving distance (45 minutes) of LakeNakuruNational Park, famous for its flamingo's and rhino, and LakeBogoria another beautiful park.
Tristan and Lucinda Voorspuy have lived here for over 15 years with their two children. Immaculately run by Cindy, guests are welcome to join in with the house party atmosphere. Upstairs there are 3 large bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms and a further 2 bedrooms suitable for a family wanting to share a bathroom. Downstairs the large drawing room and dining room provide the ideal setting for a house party with an outside veranda that overlooks the beautiful tropical gardens. There is also a cottage adjacent to the house with 3 separate double en-suite rooms.
Deloraine is the headquarters of Offbeat Safaris' Mobile Riding Safari operation. Their yard and stables, with approximately 80 horses, boasts some of the finest polo ponies in Kenya. Guests are welcome to ride around the farm and the nearby mountain providing spectacular views across the surrounding countryside. There is also a cross country course and a polo ground. Finally guests can also go on a full day's game drive with picnic lunch to LakeNakuruNational Park. Other activities include magnificent gardens, a croquet lawn, tennis court and a swimming pool.
Deloraine is open throughout the year.
Sosian
Sosian is a privately owned game ranch, located on the Laikipia Plateau, an area historically known for its wildlife and ranching traditions. The old ranch house was built in the 1940s by Italian artisans, but has recently been beautifully renovated to accommodate 14 guests in 7 double cottages. Guests can dine on large open verandas looking out across the savannah or relax on comfortable sofas in the large sitting room. The guest cottages are all set in the tropical garden which is home to an array of exotic plants. Each cottage has large double or twin beds and en-suite bathrooms.
A wide variety of ecosystems are present on Sosian. The northern half of the ranch is dominated by open grass plains dotted with acacia trees. Herds of the rare Grevy's zebra, Grant's gazelle, oryx and other antelope congregate here. The southern part of Sosian is mostly acacia woodland and inhabited by elephant, buffalo, reticulated giraffe and impala. Lion and leopard are seen or heard regularly around Sosian. Even endangered wild dogs, thought to be extinct in Laikipia, have returned to the area in healthy numbers. Bisecting the southern portion of Sosian is the EwasoNarokRiver which provides the perfect habitat for hippo, otter and prolific birdlife.
Sosian offers walking safaris, horse riding around the ranch, day and night game drives, camel safaris, and the chance to involve oneself in the daily life of the ranch. Equally one might choose to relax by the large swimming pool, play croquet or just admire the stunning scenery of Laikipia and the snow capped peaks of Mount Kenya on the horizon. One particular highlight for many guests is the glorious walk up to the waterfalls on the EwasoNarokRiver. With some Dutch courage and a little encouragement, one can jump from the 30 foot falls into the deep pool below.
Max Hastings wrote about his time in Laikipia "it is amazing how soon one becomes indifferent to the outside world, concerned only for the big events taking place within one's own horizon." Sosian embodies this notion. In this great wilderness you find both beauty and comfort but the only thing worth thinking about is what you intend to do with your long African day'.
Meru Camp
Offbeat Meru Camp is the epitomi of an exclusive safari experience in a remote wildlife area. The camp is small, traditional and located on the edge of MeruNational Park in the Bisanadi National Reserve.
Almost bought to its knees by heavy poaching in the 80's and 90's MeruNational Park is now thriving. It is once again home to the big five, after the recent re-introduction of Rhino, as well as a great number of other species including Grevy's Zebra, Reticulated Giraffe, Leopard, Gerenuk and Lesser Kudu. The park has 13 rivers which flow through the area encouraging a spectacular variety of birdlife. Immortalised by Joy Adamson in her book 'Born Free' and with only 2 lodges the likelihood of seeing anyone else while you stay here is small - you feel you have the park to yourself.
Hosted by owner Piers Winkwirth and Rosanagh de Stacpoole the camp has the ideal level of comforts. The camp consists of only 6 tents - 3 twin and 3 double. Each tent is furnished with a large iron bed, its own en-suite bathroom, traditional bucket shower and flushing loo. In addition, there is 24 hour solar lighting in the tents, while the rest of the camp is lit by traditional 'tilly' lamps. Informal dining is hosted in the mess tent or around the campfire. There is also a spacious 'mess' tent with comfortable sofas, a writing table and bar.
Days are tailored to suit guest's requirements. Activities include day and evening game drives; walking safaris with armed guides; bush breakfasts, picnics and sundowners; fly fishing in the local rivers. This area of Kenya gets quite hot during the dry season. After an active morning in the bush there's no better feeling than coming back to camp and cooling off in the stunning infinity swimming pool watching the wildlife as it comes to drink from the BisanadiRiver below you.
